Maria Sharapova launches tennis web TV show... but all eyes are on her huge sparkling engagement ring

She was there to launch a new web-based TV show that would follow six promising female tennis players throughout a competition. But all eyes were captivated by Maria Sharapova's huge engagement ring that demanded attention as it sparkled in the Florida sun. The tennis ace, 23, kept her outfit simple as she took to the stage in cropped cream slacks and a short-sleeved floral blouse.

But the huge sparkler on her finger was hard to miss as she spoke to the crowd at the launch of Xperia Hot Shots at the the Surfcomber Beach Hotel in Miami yesterday. Xperia Hot Shots is a brand new series coming to YouTube on March 22 that follows six up-and-coming female tennis players on the WTA Tour on an exciting journey that brings the worlds of tennis and entertainment together.

Each week, short videos will show the girls building their off-court profiles as they create content and engage with their growing fanbases via their Xperia handsets. They will take part in exhilarating stunts and challenges, meet with celebrities all across the globe and learn new skills in a bid to build their popularity.

The player who becomes the most popular on Facebook at the end of the season receives a support package from sponsors of the Sony Ericsson Open. The six players were unveiled at the event and include France's Alize Cornet, Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova, Germany's Sabine Lisicki, Britain's Heather Watson, Romania's Sorana Cirstea and Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the US.

Russian-born Maria, a former World Number 1, has sadly had a career marred by injury. She was forced to undergo surgery for a shoulder injury in October 2008 which kept her out of the game for seven months but she made her comeback in May 2009 and has since won three singles titles.

Two days before the Xperia launch, she was beaten 6-1 6-2 by Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark during their semi-final match at the Indian Wells WTA tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California. Last October, she got engaged to her boyfriend, Serbian New Jersey Nets star Sasha Vujacic, after he proposed with the huge ring which is believed to be worth £250,000.
