My mom is buying a new iMac 17" soon, and I was wondering how I would get the files from her Windows 98 machine to the iMac via Ethernet, because she doesn't have a burner. Would it be the same as networking to Macs, or would it require special software?

I'm sorry, my goal wasn't to keep people out of the topic, but to make it easier to talk about the two separate topics. Why can't you post over there?

I think these definitely hint at what's to come with the iPhone 5 and iOS 5. No doubt the features as seen here are not complete, but they seem to be in line with improvements that Apple might be considering with the next iOS upgrade. As for the iPhone 5, I am expecting a spec bump (A5, etc.) and a 64 GB option. It just makes sense with what's happened in the past.

Not surpising at all. It's all about control of content and money.
All studios, rather music or movie have always hated the idea of selling content even though it makes them a ton of money. If they could do away with all of it, including DVD sells, they would. What they truly want is for you to pay a fee every time you want to view or listen to content and you never "own" anything period. Nothing physical at all to buy, just pay for it every time you view or listen.
Exactly.
In this case, the license is only for delivery to a cable box for viewing on a home TV set. Not for any "mobile" device or otherwise...

2) which other carriers will Apple partner with.
If it's Verizon or T-Mobile, I wouldn't consider it a step up. I might consider going back to Sprint now that they've considerably improved their customer service and prices. For me, Verizon would be a lateral move, as their customer service, prices and billing are a serious detractor, and their network is actually worse that AT&T's here where I am.
Verdict: All American cell companies are garbage, period. Just another reason I'm considering moving overseas.

So when everyone buys hybrids and the gas tax revenue dries up we will be forced to pay for how far we drive. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has a suggestion for raising money to fix the nations highways: tax drivers based on how many miles they drive each year.
In a report written in response to a request from Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-North Dakota), the CBO laments about the shortfall in the federal budgets appropriation for highway maintenance and reckons its time drivers start footing the bill based on how often their foot is on the gas pedal. The driver would be charged according to the number of vehicle miles traveled (VMT) above that which he is allowed under appropriately promulgated guidelines.
The 26-page study is entitled (none to cleverly) Alternative Approaches to Funding Highways and goes into some detail regarding the new tax scheme and the benefits and challenges thereof.
About 25 percent of the nations highways, which carry about 85 percent of all road traffic, are paid for in part by the federal government.... reads the opening line of the paper. In other words, why should the federal government, already so strapped for cash, keeping paying so much for the highway while those who use them get a free ride?http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/usnews/congress/6847-cbo-recommends-taxing-drivers-for-miles-traveled

I'm not a photographer, so I don't understand the significance of this update, but I was surprised to see all of these integration improvements. Is integrating with Flickr or your iPod or keynote that useful to a pro? I'd have though these were things more of interest to an average Mac user trying to show off his vacation/baby photos.
Are you pros interested in these things? Or maybe Apple is trying to get the serious amateur interested in Aperture?

I think Republicans just have this weird vision for America where everyone is capable and responsible. We're not. So we need
... free everything and someone to teach us how to wipe our butts. We have this weird vision for American where everything should be an incentive to be responsible.
anything else promotes irresponsibility
"Hmmm, I already have health care, a second hand television, and enough food to live off of... Nahhh, I'll just look for a job next week" (all meanwhile we're swimming in unsustainable debt, and outrageous taxation) = nightmare scenario
the funny thing is that some of you would say "your nightmare scenario sounds awesome!", and that makes me sad

But these taxes are historically for funding the construction and upkeep of the highways, not to curb gas usage or to spur efficiency.
A car that gets 60 mpg will do just as much 'damage' to a road surface as a car that get 8 mpg....but the 50mpg car will pay much, MUCH less for upkeep of that road than the other in a gas-tax based situation.
A car that is more fuel efficient also likely does less damage to the road as heavier vehicles that do the highest amount of damage as typically consume the most fuel.
I just don't see the practicality of this tax based on the difficulty in enforcing it.

If you can watch an HD movie over your satilite or cable system then somehow the cable or stilite company found a way to electronically distribute the HD content to you. That 25GB of data found a way to get into your house. Not only did it get into the huse but it did it in real time
This is quite different from on-demand hd download. Cable and satellite bandwidth is much greater than traditional internet and it's multicast.
However, for a 25GB movie you only need about a 4 MBPS to stream it (that is, start watching as soon as you start downloading). Most 5-6 MBPS dsl packages are available now for $35/mo, so it doesn't seem that far off.
I think Wal-mart wanted cheaper dvd prices to be more competitive with Target and now Target is trying to get the same treatment. The winning solution is that the studios will probably allow Wal-mart and Target to sell downloadable movies, too, and everyone will be happy except for Wal-mart who will still want cheaper dvd prices.
Truth is, the downloads are less than dvd quality, don't have extras, you need broadband internet and a fast computer or an iPod, and you can't wrap them up and give them as gifts. DVD's will continue to sell well even at a higher price (especially at Wal-mart and Target).

Wow this is big! I'm not sure but hasn't it been like forever since Mac had 5% marketshare? Over 5% must put them in the top 5 pc makers? Maybe top 3? This is already huge growth, if they get to 10% or more look out!

I think it could be a real winner all round.
More and more TVs are being sold as "Internet Ready." The problem is, on most of them the implementation and user experience is horrible. Half of them require a CAT5 wired connection to your network. And the other half need optional Wi-Fi adapter. Most consumers have neither the time, skill, nor patience to buy, install, and configure them.
Then there is the issue of usability. It is awkward and time-consuming to try and navigate text boxes using most TV remotes.
Apple licensing AirPlay as a means of letting TVs show YouTube content, plus stream photos, music, and video content on your home pc or iPad/iPhone would be a tremendous feature for TV makers to sell.
The interesting question would be whether or not Apple licensed AirPlay to device makers of Android or Windows phones and tablets. This seems much less likely.

I'm interested in this type of application to help keep track of my kids when they're out and about.
I've found some other great tracking options for the young ones at: http://www.iphoneandkids.com/2010/12/child-tracking-apps-.html

Read kainjow's post (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2986197&postcount=15); you get more than just an email address for $99.
Well, Google also provides a free calendar, a spreadsheet application, a chat application (nicely integrated into the GMail web interface), a web page creator, etc..
Have a look at http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/
For online albums, there are lots of non-Google free offers. If you buy .Mac, you pay mainly for the integration with Apple's iLife applications.

I am looking for the full schedule for the developer conference. Specifically, I need to know when we will be done on Friday. This will help me book my tickets back to my town. Can someone help me with this? ( If there is another thread specifically about the developer conference, please point me to that as well. )

How about no driving tax. How about we tax people appropriately and get rid of crap like business tax incentives and farm subsidies since they're only ever abused by people that 'play the game'.
Why should we be screwing over regular people so much.
I agree with the first half of your post, but the "regular people" need to stop trying to blame the government for their problems. If they have a crappy life or can't afford something they think they need, it probably isn't because they are overtaxed.
